Why you should boycott Nokia

Thursday, 22 October 09
Nokia just annunced an action against Apple:
Nokia announced that it has today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in Delaware, alleging that Apple's iPhone infringes Nokia patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards.
To me this sounds like: if you can't compete with the quality of the products you can try to sue to beat your competitor. This is not acceptable. Even more sad is that Nokia patents are more or less unavoidable, this is what I understand from the Nokia press release itself:
The ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007
This is just too sad. I'll never purchase another Nokia phone in the future.

Every big company sues a big competitor sometime, wheter they are right or not. I don't think this a (right) reason to boycott Nokia. Apple does worst things IMO.

Industrial patents can only be acceptable when they protect
long term investment of firms whose innovative products have
a beneficial impact to a large part of population.
IMHO using patents for corporate warfare is always a bad sign
for the firm engaging it.

I was leaning that way in any case, but I think my next phone will be an Android phone.

@Diego: Indeed I'm not with Apple at all either. Their behavior is not acceptable too in many respects (for instance the Apple Store). Still it's clear that Nokia is suing the company that is able to make better products. The company that put Nokia in big troubles (Like Nokia put Motorola in troubles). This is not fair IMHO.

@David: I've an iPhone and I'm getting tired by Apple. The first step was to jailbreak it, so I do everything I'm not supposed to do with the phone. The next one will be to get an Android phone.

I don't understand: GSM, UMTS and WLAN are Nokia Patents? I don't think so, maybe we are talking about some technology invented by Nokia to interface mobile phones with those technologies.

In the statement I read:
"Nokia has already successfully entered into license agreements including these patents with approximately 40 companies, including virtually all the leading mobile device vendors, allowing the industry to benefit from Nokia's innovation."

So, maybe the problem is that Apple have used some Nokia technology without paying the royalty to Nokia and not that Nokia is suing Apple because iPhone is the market leader.

point is cross licensing is the normal thing between big evil corps. What this lawsuit basically means is "ok you get to use our technologies (umts, gsm, whataver), and we get to use yours (multitouch patent anyone?)".

It is true that cross licensing is a common way for exchanging technologies between corps (too bad that at that level, transactions are carried out by lawyers!), but this does not seem to be the case. In these contractions, they tend to avoid "heavy weapons" like suing the counterpart. So I tend to agree with antirez' analysis.

@Antirez: why did you buy an iPhone in first place, if you already knew that you would have jailbroken it? because the technology of the iPhone is (was?) the best?
(No complains here, only wonderings. Soon I have to choose my next phone between an iPhone and an Android... :)

sorry for offtopic, the bloody NOKIA. I bought a 6700 this summer from carrier O2 in Germany, after 2 days without any usage, the phone is dead and won't boot, just sit there with a blank screen, sent it back to repair center, until today, after 3 months, I still haven't got the phone yet, sux, will never buy their phone again.

hi,
Thanks for shring

In open wi-fi connections are suitable, but be smart before you connect. Be conscious of your environment and what data you are sending and receiving. Save the communication that you wouldn't want to be viewed by stranger for when you have a more secure connection for secure communication

well, if you can't innovate, litigate.
